Pietersite is a rare, striking variety of chalcedony known as the "tempest stone" because its swirling, chaotic chatoyant patterns resemble a stormy sky. Discovered in 1962 in Namibia by Sid Pieters and later found in China, it features mixed-in bands of gold, blue, red, and grey. Made of quartz and chalcedony enclosing fibrous fragments of crocidolite.
In crystal lore, it is believed that it symbolizes transformation, inner strength, and the power to clear away emotional turmoil just as a strong wind or lightning clears the air.
